  • Raw, non-notable vanity page Sajt 04:23, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC)
  • Delete. Edeans 04:35, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC) I change my vote to keep due to the total rewrite by Smerdis; this despite the fact I cannot stand the song "Dominique." It is nonetheless *sigh* noteworthy. Edeans 17:26, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC)
  • Delete. Of course. Rje 06:41, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC)

  • Delete: Qualifies as a speedy deletion under the "spam" rule. Any article that contains no text but a link or almost no text but a link is spam. This is "She's in college. Go here." Geogre 14:44, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC)
    • Keep: Smerdis did a great job, and the song is notable 8 ways to Sunday, so to speak. Geogre 04:17, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)
  • Waidaminnit! I completely replaced the vanity page with a page about the song by The Singing Nun, who went on to OD on barbiturates in the 1980s. (See arguments for the existence of God) So at any rate it is completely different now, somewhat noteworthy, and should be kept. -- Smerdis of Tlön 16:04, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC)
    • Yeesh. Couldn't we have deleted this and then gotten a new article Dominque (song) that didn't preserve this spam in its history? Dang it. The song is quite notable in quite a few ways, and more so than some current pop princess records, but I so don't like saving the spam. Geogre 20:13, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC)
      • Just for future reference, is there a technical reason why this is preferable? Are even deleted edits valuable to Google bombers and similar vandals? -- Smerdis of Tlön 21:07, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC)
    • Not that I'm aware of, although that might well occur in the future, but I'm thinking more of the person who first created the nasty coming along and reverting it. It's true that that could happen with a de novo article, too, but I can sort of imagine the person saying, "Wait. That's not what I wrote!" and then overwriting it. Hypothetical, perhaps, but I sometimes feel like we're running along the highway with a litter bag cleaning up after folks. Geogre 01:25, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)
      • Comment: Interesting suggestion, with enormous policy implications that need to be considered. But meanwhile I think we need to stick to the policies we have. Andrewa 14:48, 11 Dec 2004 (UTC)

  • Keep, I added a line about the true meaning and ironies of one of the words in the song, and mentioned that it never got much traction in France (I speak French fluently, every day). Wyss 18:12, 9 Dec 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep in its current form. Andre (talk) 23:02, Dec 9, 2004 (UTC)

  • Keep: great job. I changed my mind :) Sajt 22:45, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep it. —[[User:Radman1|RaD Man (talk)]] 23:10, 10 Dec 2004 (UTC)
  • Keep!. Davidl9999 19:00, 11 Dec 2004 (UTC) Dislike of a subject (or a song - however cheesy) is little reason to remove the entry. I looked this subject up in Wikipedia today because it came up in conversation. Definitely useful.

nique-nique

[edit]

— Preceding unsigned comment added by 92.90.68.213 (talk) 19:53, 18 March 2015 (UTC)[reply]

changed French and English lyrics to indicate Dominic was male, not female

[edit]

but now it is used as a female's name

Actually Dominic, the way you've spelled it, is still a man's name. According to the Wikpedia article on St. Dominic, he had several names, most of them starting with Dominic but at least one starting with Domingo, the Spanish version of the name. It's true that at least in America, the French version, Dominique, is now a woman's name.35.129.66.46 (talk) 06:45, 29 March 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Movie about boy and kitten that used this song?

[edit]

Can anyone help me identify this movie? It was a European movie, a very sad movie. A small boy found a kitten and struggled to keep it. I think it eventually died or was killed. I'm fairly sure (but I was a child myself when I saw it, so I could be wrong) that the background for the story was a war-torn city somewhere. There was rubble and bombed buildings in many shots. Since I was a child, I have wanted to find this movie, but this is all I remember of it: the boy, the kitten and the Dominique soundtrack. Thank you for whatever help you can provide! 68.203.92.3 (talk) 18:22, 6 August 2008 (UTC) Wynn[reply]

Wildly different translations

[edit]

There are a number of online translations of this that are wildly different from each other. For example:

From http://lyricstranslate.com/en/dominique-dominic.html

Dominic, Nic, Nic
Nic, goes along very simply
Travelling in poverty and singing.
On every road, in every place,
He just talks about the Lord,
He just talks about the Lord.
In the age when John Lackland
Was the king of England,
Our father, Dominix
Fought the Albigensians.
(Chorus)
One day a heretic
Led him through the brambles,
But our father, Dominic
By his own joy, converted him.
(Chorus)
Without a camel or a coach,
He travelled Europe on foot,
Scandinavia and Provence,
In saintly poverty.

From http://www.allthelyrics.com/lyrics/the_singing_nun/dominique-lyrics-425279.html

Dominique, nique, nique, over the land he plods
And sings a little song
Never asking for reward
He just talks about the Lord
He just talks about the Lord
At a time when Johnny Lackland
Over England was the King
Dominique was in the backland
Fighting sin like anything
Now a heretic, one day
Among the thorns forced him to crawl
Dominique with just one prayer
Made him hear the good Lord's call
Without horse or fancy wagon
He crossed Europe up and down
Poverty was his companion
As he walked from town to town

From http://www.markfoster.net/name/dominique_english.html

Dominique, nique, nique
I will tell of Dominique
His goodness to acclaim
And I pray the song I sing
Will some simple pleasure bring
That the world shall know his name!
I will tell of Dominique as I sing this little song
And when I sing the chorus all the world will sing along!
Dominique, nique, nique it was good Saint Dominique
He lived for you and me
From his labors long ago
Came a better world I know! And his love shall always be!
Though I'm poor, said Dominique as he spoke unto the Lord,
I will be your humble servent and your love is my reward!
Dominique, nique, nique I will follow Dominique
His burdens will I share
For his courage will I pray
His teachings to obey! His words shall be my prayer!
By the kindness of his heart and the labor of his hand
He brought love and understanding as he wandered through the land!

Google translate:

Dominique, nique
Nique is simply going
Poor road and singing
In all ways, in all places
He speaks only of God
He speaks only of God
A e era or John Lackland
Of England was King
Dominique, our Father
Fought the Albigensian
(chorus)
One day a heretic
By brambles leads
But our father Dominic
By joy converts
(chorus)

Diligence or he parcout Europe foot
Scandinavia and Provence
In the holy poverty

Does anyone have a reliable source on this? If Deckers herself recorded it in French and English, it shouldn't be difficult to find the words she used. --Guy Macon (talk) 05:18, 5 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

^In any case she didn't use the above mentioned ones (the sources of which themselves admit that they made a translation. ~--Loginnigol (talk) 16:11, 8 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
