America/Australia

[edit]

How can Greg Norman be described as Australian when the article itself notes he lives in Florida? That makes him American, unless there is a Florida in Australia that I'm unaware of. ;) — Preceding unsigned comment added by ShaneKing (talkcontribs) 05:09, 9 February 2004 (UTC)[reply]

Lots of Americans are living in Iraq just now. By your reasoning above that makes them all Iraqi, doesn't it ? Unless there's an Iraq in America that I'm unaware of ;) Greg Norman was born in Queensland, so unless he's taken out American citizenship, he's Australian.-- Derek Ross 05:21, 9 Feb 2004 (UTC)

His profile is no longer that great here (Australia), but if it was, that awful American accent would probably get some stick. Pretty much only see him when he's flogging one thing or another. — Preceding unsigned comment added by *Paul* (talkcontribs) 17:11, 29 April 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Wow, I was born in Queensland too but live in Ireland. I guess i'll have to start getting offended at all those Irish jokes! ...and stop telling them!Factoid Killer 14:18, 21 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Why would Norman live in Australia when the USA is the centre of the golfing world? Golf is much more popular in the USA than it is in Australia. He spent years playing on the USA tour. I dont think Norman has even taken out dual citizenship with the USA post 2002. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 121.44.68.25 (talk) 16:48, 26 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Came across this today:

https://www.washingtontimes.com/multimedia/collection/famous-conservative-athletes-1/?page=27

First, I am a bit skeptical that his is particularly conservative (I remember seeing him in photos with Bill Clinton), but back to the point - this is evidence (but not proof) that he is an American citizen (there are prohibitions on political contributions by non-U.S. nationals). If he is an American citizen, that should be noted.

Finally, the photo shows him at the Senior Players Championship, while his article states that he has avoided playing on the Senior Tour. 172.92.51.118 (talk) 05:41, 28 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

'Fix'

[edit]

Changed "2 wins in 1997" to "2 wins in 1998". Rechecked, realized 1997 was right, then went to revert, but someone already beat me to it.John ISEM (talk) 19:34, 16 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Divorce

[edit]

"would have taken a bullet" quote from Mills about Greg Norman surely belongs here? ROxBo (talk) 14:40, 1 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nickname

[edit]

He is nicknamed "The Great White Shark," or simply "The Shark," a reference to a shark inhabiting Australian waters as well as Norman's blond hair, size and aggressive golf style.

As far as i am aware.. Sharks don't have blonde hair, well except in cartoons. This might want editing? 81.129.112.16 (talk) 23:39, 9 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Earlier in his career, his hair at times almost looked white, like an albino. I think this is where the "white" in "Great White Shark" may relate to his hair. But it actually was an Augusta sportswriter who coined the term in 1981, with the headline "Great White Shark Leads Masters", I think. Greg Norman said he'd like to meet and thank that guy, because he made Norman a lot of money.John ISEM (talk) 19:34, 16 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Need Additional References for Verification

[edit]

Under Professional Career section, there are 10 paragraphs which do not have any references for verification (between reference numbers 29 and 30). Without references for verification, how would the reader know if the information is accurate? I saw the same problem with the John Daly article, so this lack of references may be a trend with golf related articles on Wikipedia. I will add references to this section if any can be found. If not, this information should be removed from this article. Mistercontributer (talk) 17:56, 30 March 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ken Venturi/1996 Masters

[edit]

For the 1996 Masters Tournament, where he suffered "one of the worst meltdowns in major championship history (along with Ken Venturi" - the colour commentator on the US TV channel was .... Ken Venturi! I remember the other anchor, as the debacle unfolded, saying to Ken something on the order of 'you know just how that feels, Ken', to which he replied something like 'indeed I do'. I wish I could find a transcript of the coverage, or something - that would be an interesting note to add. Noel (talk) 01:07, 26 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think I remember that. The way I remember it, or what I remember, was that while Norman and Faldo were on 13, Jim Nantz asked Ken Venturi how does a player like Norman regroup after something like what had just happened to him (and come back to win the tournament). Ken answered by saying (in a somewhat animated fashion) that he didn't know and referenced his own 1956 Masters loss to Jack Burke Jr. (when he shot a final round 80, I think, two worse than Norman's 78). It probably doesn't really belong on Norman's page, but if it's not in Ken Venturi's own article, that would be a good place for it.John ISEM (talk) 00:06, 25 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

LIV Golf Investments Chief Executive

[edit]

According to this ABC article Norman is CEO of LIV Golf Investments, who appear to be tryingt o establish a tournament in Saudi Arabia. That seems notable enough to include in the biography, but as I don't know much about golf or Greg Norman, I'm not certain.--ConfusedAndAfraid (talk) 03:14, 21 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]

PIF investment portfolio

[edit]

PIF's investment portfolio does not seem to have any direct relevance to Greg Norman, yet it has been persistently added. Additionally, mainstream reliable sources are not routinely listing PIF's investment portfolio in the context of Greg Norman (or LIV Golf), therefore it seems to me that nor should we, per WP:UNDUE. Thoughts please. wjematherplease leave a message... 10:21, 19 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Without getting into a political debate, I'm pretty sure that it is pretty common knowledge within the golf world (and probably outside) that LIV Golf is funded by the PIF. Their investment may not be directly linked towards Greg Norman, however he is a figure-head for their investment into golf. However User:Wes624's additions to Norman's article re PIF are not relevant to him and belong elsewhere. A brief mention of the PIF (without going into the history of the PIF and their investments outside of golf) and their investment into LIV Golf would be most appropriate for Norman's article Jimmymci234 (talk) 20:38, 19 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed. Apologies for not being clearer. PIF would remain mentioned; it is only the addition of a list of specific PIF investments that would be reverted, none of which are linked to Norman. wjematherplease leave a message... 22:13, 19 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
All things MBS, PIF should be omitted from the Greg Norman page minus the fact that PIF is the majority stakeholder in LIV Golf.
"LIV Golf Investments is led by Greg Norman as CEO. The LIV Golf Invitational Series began in 2022 and consist of seven regular-season events where players compete both individually for points and as part of a team. The series provoked strong resistance from the established PGA Tour and European Tour organisations, including suspensions of players who joined the series, and criticism of its financial backing by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund."
The above is all that should be said on the Greg Norman page.
The suspected control of the PIF, the seizure of assets, etc should be omitted. They have nothing to do with Greg Norman. Wes624 (talk) 22:16, 19 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If you think these things should be omitted, why have you repeatedly added them? wjematherplease leave a message... 08:23, 20 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
