Origin of FNJ code[edit]

I've seen some scattered speculation that the code FNJ actually is name-based, but didn't have enough info to write down until now:

The speculation is that the code is based on the Russian transcription of Pyongyang, Пхеньян Pkhenʹyan or Phenʹjan.
There are definitely older romanization systems that convert я to ja, but I have never seen an explanation for the starting F until very recently, when I heard a native Russian speaker talking (in English) about the June 2024 Russia-North Korea deal. When he said the word "Pyongyang", I distinctly heard a pronunciation like "fenyan" / "fenjan" with an "f" sound at the beginning (and an "e" vowel instead of "o" in the first syllable and "n" instead of "ng").

Obviously no reliable sources (yet), but does anyone have any other thoughts or input? Zowayix001 (talk) 06:21, 9 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
