Indian River State College (IRSC) is a public college with its main campus located in Fort Pierce, Florida. It is part of the Florida College System, serving Indian River, Martin, Okeechobee, and St. Lucie counties.

The main campus, renamed Massey Campus in 2020 in honor of retiring president Edwin R. Massey,[2] spans 87 acres (35 ha). IRSC also has branch campuses in Okeechobee, Port St. Lucie, Stuart, and Vero Beach.[3]

Established in 1959 as Indian River Junior College, it moved to its current campus in 1963, courtesy of a city donation. Renamed Indian River Community College in 1970, it later became Indian River State College on July 1, 2008, reflecting its transition to a four-year institution.[4][5]

Academics

[edit]

IRSC offers both associate and bachelor's degree programs in subject areas such as middle- and secondary-school teacher education in math and science, exceptional student education, nursing, organizational management, public-safety administration, and healthcare management. It is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. It provides various educational programs including technical certificates, applied technology diplomas, an adult high school program, and dual enrollment options. The college operates the Clark Advanced Learning Center in partnership with the Martin County School District. Recognized by the Aspen Institute as one of the top community colleges in the U.S. in 2014,[6] IRSC was named the best state college in 2019. In 2022, it introduced the "Promise Program" to offer tuition-free associate degrees to local high school graduates, boosting freshman enrollment.[7][8]

Athletics

[edit]

The college’s athletic teams, known as the Pioneers, compete in the Southern Conference of the Florida State College Activities Association. IRSC is acclaimed for its swimming and diving programs, with the men's team holding 48 consecutive NJCAA championships and the women’s team 41, marking the longest unbroken U.S. collegiate championship streak in any sport.[9]
