old talk

[edit]

Need to add discussion of his role in creation of educational TV in the US. This should include: testimony supporting the Educational Television Facilities Act, work for creation of WETA, Washington, WNET, New York, and KCET, Los Angeles. Also board membership of WTTW Chicago.

After all of this, it should at least be mentioned that he was (is?) director of The Annenberg Washington Program.

Please jump in and add this info, and please, please, please correct any style issues. It's my first article after all. :) Mykej 10:56, 27 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Added a sentence explaining what the wasteland speech was about, and change the link to the wiki page. Also folded in the info from the existing "Newton Minow" page and chnged it to a redirect to here.

I originally found a blank page for Newton N. Minow by following a link from the Adlai Stevenson article, and I neglected to check for "Newton Minow" until after I'd written this article. Since there's quite a bit more info here now, the old info is included, and Newton N. Minow is more specific, I think the redirect is justified. We now won't have to worry about what to do about a Newton Q. Minow that needs an article. Mykej 22:10, 28 Oct 2004 (UTC)

Note to self (or anyone else who wants to do it): more sources for Minow info. Surprisingly difficult to dig up, since googling returns a jillion hits about the wasteland speech. Anyway, here's stuff to check out and roll into the article:

Lots of good stuff if you take more than 10 minutes to look. Mykej 09:55, 7 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Mary Minow source

[edit]

For some reason the non-controversial source on Mary Minow keeps getting reverted. I've restored the source yet again. If there is any good reason to keep this very plain-vanilla source out of the article, please contact me on my talk page. Thanks. Casey Abell 18:57, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Goals

[edit]

This is an exciting article with much potential. Since other edits are not that frequent, I plan on redoing the article but keeping most or all of the current contents, just adding more and maybe some rewrite. I don't see that there's any controversy except the above on Mary Minow. No problem, we'll resolve that after I improve the article.

I hope that the raters will hold off on rating this article (importance, etc.) until there's been a chance to improve it.VK35 18:20, 26 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Tenure at FCC

[edit]

The article (in its current form, at least) never indicates the years in which he was FCC chairman. The implication is that it was for the first two years (1961-62) of the Kennedy administration. (And did he serve just the two years on the Commission, or was he on it for longer, but not as chairman? The article says that Kennedy appointed him to the beard but doesn't say wjhether or not he initially appointed him chairman.) If he was on the board for only the two years, and if he departed before Kennedy's assassination, some indication as to whether or not it was voluntary would be helpful. Source of The Groucho Marx Accusation

[edit]
Added this - Groucho Marx, speaking on William F Buckley's Firing_Line_(TV_program), accused him of 'stealing' that line from T.S. Elliot and claimed he confronted Minow directly about it.

It came from this timestamp in the Buckley interview on the tube cXlIZBZpkoA?t=1237 — Preceding unsigned comment added by BimBamBroom (talkcontribs) 21:06, 23 January 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Education

[edit]

The article says he earned a J.D. but surely he earned an LL.B. as everybody did at that time and in or after 1970 it was changed to a J.D. I know because I was in law school in that era, and were it not for the draft my 1970 LL.B. would have been among the first J.D.s

The article also seems to say it was a WW II era thing to allow students who finished law school to earn a bachelor's degree. Actually, I had the option of having my first year of law school also count as my last year of undergrad, so my B.A. came after my first year of law school.

Somebody should clarify the article with these two items. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.49.27.38 (talk) 18:21, 24 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
