Ongoing Editing (03/21)[edit]

Hello! I am a student editor from Texas A&M University and will be working on this article for the next few weeks as part of my work for a Technical and Professional Editing course. Some issues I would like to address and hopefully remedy through my work:

  • The article would benefit from light copyediting. While it is structured and organized well, the readability could be improved by better transitions, rephrasing, and general grammatical edits. I would like to focus especially on the History of Finance section.
  • Building off my last point, the History of Finance section needs to be thoroughly edited in terms of content. It needs to be rewritten in some areas to match an encyclopedic tone, and some of the information needs to be condensed for readability.
  • This article is flagged for missing citations. I will try my best to locate these and see if I can cite the information properly.

Please feel free to respond with any questions or concerns you may have about my work; I look forward to contributing! Frashid01 (talk) 00:07, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Comments

  • I began my editing by revising the "History of Finance" section for clarity. I felt that a good portion of the section needed to be edited for grammatical clarity, which included rearranging phrases, omitting certain details that detracted from the main points, and light copyediting. I noticed in this section there was a repeated error of using the present tense for verbs describing past actions, so I fixed that as well. If I omitted anything valuable, please reach out and I can add it back in! Frashid01 (talk) 22:42, 25 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Following the "History of Finance" section, I am finding very little grammatical errors. I am choosing to rephrase some portions, or rearrange the words for better readability, but am not changing any content. I am trying to catch areas where I can find original research, but since I am not well-versed in Finance it's hard to distinguish what is accurate and what isn't. Does anyone in this community know any external resources not listed on the page where I can read up on Financial information? Frashid01 (talk) 23:16, 25 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Finished copyediting the article. There were very few errors, but I caught a few syntax and grammatical errors that I fixed. The majority of my edits were for sentences that tried to include too much information at once. I am struggling to find areas to include new citations, as it seems as though most of the citations have been taken care of. Frashid01 (talk) 04:32, 26 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I have endeavored to polish the introduction. Apart from wordsmithing, I notice that it includes multiple references to Investopedia. I know Investopedia is written by people that sign their articles, but some of them appear to be stockbrokers. It seems to me that Investopedia is not a pure encyclopedia -- it's also a platform for advertising financial services. I'd like to see something more authoritative, e.g. references to Encyclopedia Britannica, a mass market book by a financial journalist or even a college textbook. I will search for some. Good luck with your project!BuzzWeiser196 (talk) 13:15, 3 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Encyclopedia Britannica article on finance.. I like their first paragraph. Maybe we can tinker with the Wikipedia lede to include some of these thoughts so we can cite this instead of just relying on Investopedia. I majored in finance in college and had a corporate finance career, so I can be of some help here. Cordially, BuzzWeiser196 (talk) 13:59, 3 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The History of Finance needs more citations to reliable sources. It's well-written, but all statements should be supported by footnotes which point the reader to reliable, verifiable sources which support the written text. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Reliable_sources. Cordially, BuzzWeiser196 (talk) 11:29, 5 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I've added a citation to a college text book (Melicher and Welshans) to the lede, which satisfies the issue I raised on April 3, 2021. BuzzWeiser196 (talk) 20:35, 14 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Finance definition[edit]

Hi BuzzWeiser196, thanks for finding a textbook definition [1], but don't you think that this definition is a bit circular? It would be like saying that bakery is the study of bakers, bakeries, and baking techniques, which does not answer the question what do bakers do?. That's not really helpful as a wikipedia definition isn't it? If you agree, I offer to find a better one myself. JBchrch (talk) 20:41, 14 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the feedback. Feel free to improve. My main concern is that we not rely only on Investopedia. Cordially, BuzzWeiser196 (talk) 12:10, 15 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Hi JBchrch. Please take a look at what I just published. I think it addresses your concern while retaining the textbook citations. Of course, feel free to improve. Cordially, BuzzWeiser196 (talk) 11:28, 19 April 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Fintor: deleted text/citation to Irons textbook[edit]

User Fintor: With all the recent edits to the lead in this article, we've lost the following sentences and citation. I'd like to see them reinstated.
It is also the study of how to determine the value of assets such as stocks, bonds, loans, and by extension entire companies. Accurately determining value is crucial to sound business decisions. In some cases, such as one company acquiring another or entering a new line of business, judgements about asset values can make or break the investor. [1]
I put a good deal of effort into finding this material, because I thought the article relied too heavily on citations to encyclopedia articles, some of which aren't even signed by the author. Published college textbooks are, in my opinion, some of the most authoritative reliable sources we have. The author of this textbook - a finance scholar - states that finance is the study of valuation. Let's let him have his say. Is that OK with you? Cordially, BuzzWeiser196 (talk) 13:52, 25 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]

User Fintor: Your user page says you're away for a few months. I don't have your e-mail address. So I'll go ahead and make the change mentioned above. When you get back, if you want to discuss this further just let me know. Cordially, BuzzWeiser196 (talk) 19:52, 26 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
User Fintor: Did you receive the pings I sent you on May 25 and May 26 re: the Irons valuation language in the Finance article? I have further concerns about the way you modified my latest edit, and would rather resolve it on the Talk page than in dueling edits. Cordially, BuzzWeiser196 (talk) 20:54, 29 May 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Reinstated; apologies re the delay in responding. Fintor (talk) 09:00, 15 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

External links[edit]

Hi all. Any thoughts on whether / what links we could have here? These were removed, but are all useful, maintained by academics, and do not seem to be commercial? Thanks. Fintor (talk) 20:52, 14 September 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Maintenance templates[edit]

Hi all. Is the article now at a stage where we can remove the Maintenance templates? Comments welcome. Thanks Fintor (talk) 07:20, 27 December 2021 (UTC)[reply]

May I assume that the community does not object? If so, I'll remove the templates next week. Thanks Fintor (talk) 10:05, 28 January 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Fintor: There are still many sections without inline citations (such as Risk management, Financial economics, and Behavioral finance), so the needs additional citations tag should remain. Regarding the original research tag, I think it should also stay as we don't know which part of the uncited material is original research or not. I have no opinion on the rewrite tag. Hanif Al Husaini (talk) 17:19, 12 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for this. I think we can safely remove the rewrite tag (much better shape than it was before the clean-up). I'll add references (of a general nature) to the sections that you have mentioned. Then, since (at least) I can't see any statements or claims that look original or unusual, perhaps we could remove the original research tag also? Thanks again. Fintor (talk) 14:15, 16 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Hanif Al Husaini: @Walkerma: @Kuru: please see recent changes; hopefully these address the above and we are now ready to remove tags? Thanks. Fintor (talk)
Hi - I'm commenting out for now... Thanks all. Fintor (talk) 12:30, 25 February 2022 (UTC)[reply]
